The Best Zero Turn Mowers mowers save you time and many are built to last many, many years. Of the almost 400 different models of zero-turns available on the market for 2020, about 150 of those models are designed specifically for residential use. They range in size and quality from inexpensive, economy models designed to mow your one-third acre lot to high performance, heavy-duty models designed to mow acres a day. Almost all of them are made in the U.S.A. by 30 different brands. Deciding which one is best for you can be hard to do. In this article, I’m going to discuss almost all the current brands of zero-turn mowers sold in the U.S. (Let me know if I miss one) I’ll give you a general description of the ZTRs they offer and give you my opinion of the mowers/brand in general. Currently, Toro, Ryobi, Ariens/Gravely, Cub Cadet, Husqvarna, John Deere, and Troy-Bilt are the most well-known brands mainly because they are sold at the “big box” retailers and spend the most on advertising. But, there are also twenty-some high-quality brands that are sold only at lawn and farm equipment dealers that have been around for years.

A quick history of zero-turn mowers:

1949 – Max Roper patents the first zero-turn mower. The Ride King. (look it up on Google)
1964 – John Regier patents the first hydraulically driven Zero-turn mower. Excel/Hustler manufactured it.
1974 – Dixon coined the term “zero-turn radius” with its mid-mount residential mower. Their mechanical cone-drive CVT transmission made mowing fun!
1980 – Walker introduces the first compact commercial zero-turn. If you want the very best cut the Walker is still the mower to beat today.
1984 – Shivvers Manufacturing creates the Country Clipper Zero Turn Mower. They produced many of the zero-turn mowers for other brands including Snapper up until 1995. They are still making quality mowers today under the Country Clipper brand.
1984-1995 – The market exploded and more than 50 manufactures entered the zero-turn mower market. Anyone remember the “Billy.?”
1995 – Bill Wright patents the stand-on mower and introduces the Wright Stander in 1997. Dane Scag is on the same mission and actually gets his Great Dane stand-on to market in 1996. (But Wright won the patent war)
1995 – Exmark introduces the Lazer Z. It was the first commercial mid-mount zero-turn widely accepted by lawn mowing contractors. Toro purchased Exmark in 1997 and the rest is history. Any mid-mount zero-turn you buy today is heavily influenced by this one mower.
1997 – SCAG introduces the TURF TIGER. This was the second most popular mid-mount ZTR for many years.
1997 – 2020 – Today, even the least expensive residential zero-turn mowers are miles ahead of the ZTR’s built in the early 90’s. Many improvements have been made including better engines, better hydrostatic transmissions, better cutting decks, and stronger frames. The industry has matured nicely and as long as you are buying American-made products you can expect almost all of the zero-turn mowers to cut well.
2019-2021 – residential battery Zero-Turns are introduced by EGO, Cub Cadet, and Ryobi. Yes, there have been electric mowers before but this was the first mass-produced by major brands. It didn’t go well and everyone – including the brands who hadn’t introduced an electric ZTR yet quickly regrouped.
2023 –

Residential Zero-Turn mowers generally come in deck sizes ranging from 30 to 72 inches.

I am not a big fan of the small 30-34 inch ZTR’s. The rider is wider than the deck so even with a mulch kit installed you can only trim on the left side. These small ZTR’s are tippy and have traction issues when turning and on slopes. Don’t buy one of the 32-34 inch models if you have a soft or sandy lawn. I definitely do not recommend a 30-34 inch zero turn mower as your first lawnmower. Buy a 42 inch or larger and rebuild your gate if it won’t fit through it. I’m also not a fan of the 72-inch models for residential use. These big, heavy 6-foot decks work best for large, flat, wide-open areas. Residential models tend to be underpowered because the brands think you don’t want to spend an extra $500 on a commercial engine. There are quite a few 42-46 inch deck models. These work well for your typical suburban 1/2 to 1 1/2-acre lawn with lots of flowerbeds and landscaping. 48-52 and 60-inch decks are the most popular sizes for residential zero-turns. The different brands all offer inexpensive models, mid-price models, and heavy-duty residential models. They work well on lawns from 1 to 10 acres or more. I rate products differently than most sites. I’ve owned all types and brands of mid-mount zero-turn mowers since they were first introduced in the early 90’s. (I’ve been using front deck models since the 70’s.) I’ve used ZTR’s not only on “regular” lawns but I have also abused them on properties that were never meant to be mowed in all types of weather and growing conditions. I regularly attend GIE-EXPO and talk to the brands to learn about their zero-turn mowers. Here are some of the things I look at when helping you find the best mower for you:

the build quality of the mower. Is the mower designed to last years?
the price: Economy mowers up to $3500 – Mid-priced $3500-$6000 – Heavy-duty above $6000
the craftsmanship: Features and attention to detail that make the mower/brand stand out
the quality of cut for weekly mowing: Almost all ZTRs will clip 1-3 inches of growth evenly but many do not throw it out the side-discharge evenly or the deflector causes the clippings to clump.
the quality of cut for rough lawns: Weight of the deck, deck support, size of the front casters and rear wheel all affect how well it mows rough lawns.
the quality of cut for bi-weekly and longer grasses: A few brands make mowers that handle pastures, road ditches, etc.
how well does it mulch: My definition of mulching well: For example, Bluegrass/Fescue/Perineal Ryegrass lawns. Set your cut height at 3 to 4 inches. How well does the mower cut 1-2 inches of additional growth. Does it cut it into fine particles and drop those clippings into the lawn? FYI: During late spring and early summer when the grass grows faster you may have to mow more often than once a week for your mower to mulch well. (If you can’t mow that often switch to side-discharge until the grass growth slows.)
the dealer network: Many brands have excellent dealer support. One brand has no dealer support but uses regional repair centers. A few brands have few dealers but exceptional support from the brand itself.
ease of warranty service: Can you bring it to any local dealer? Do you have to return it to where you purchased it? Or do they only have a remote repair center, etc?
parts networks that support the product: online, by phone, local dealer, etc.
Owner Reviews: There are many types of reviews and it’s hard to sort them out. You will find paid reviews, disgruntled owners, poor assembly by the retailer, etc. Some retailers use aggregate reviews where the reviews you are reading are for different mowers and come from many different sources. In other words, a small issue (one to two people who write bad reviews on multiple sites) is aggravated by the aggregate reviews.
The reputation of the brand today. A few brands have come a long way in the last few years for quality, dealer support, and owner loyalty. For example, Cub Cadet. A few have gotten much worse.

One Secret:

The best zero turn mower for you will be the one with friendly local service and parts availability.

If Consumer Reports or I tell you a particular model is the best but you have to drive 50 miles one way or call someone in Kansas to get a belt or set of blades – it’s not the best mower for you. The residential zero-turn market is very competitive and because of that, there are quite a few great mowers on the market and your local dealer usually sells one or two of those brands. In other words, there are many mowers that cut well, are built well, will last for you that have a local servicing dealer in your area. Consumer Reports tests are very specific and they only test a fraction of the zero-turn mowers on the market. “Trust me” we can find the best mower for you that will last you many years and it may not have been tested by Consumer Reports.

Toro makes a complete line of zero-turn riding mowers. (They offer commercial mowers that can mow over 20 acres an hour!) Ryobi Cordless Electric Residential Zero Turn!

While Toro makes the most zero-turn mowers, Ryobi makes only two. The RY48ZTR 42 inch and RY48140 54-inch electric zero-turn. Ryobi sells exclusively through The Home Depot. I’ve spent 40 years waiting for the right electric riding mower. Over the years I’ve tried every one that’s hit the market and even bought the GE ElecTrak, but up until this point, all of them have had been very disappointing. Following on the sensational 2-year success of their electric-rider, it appears that the Ryobi has made the right zero-turn electric riding mower for many homeowners. Note: This is not a heavy-duty zero-turn. It is designed for your “normal” residential 1/2 to 2-acre lawn that you mow weekly. I don’t recommend it for rough lawns, pulling heavy loads, hills, or if you expect your mower to last twenty years. But, it’s electric and it mows well… The new Ryobi 42 inch zero turn mower will mow a little over two acres on one charge of its SLA batteries. So this 42-inch zero turn mower is a great choice for suburban homeowners with 1/3 to 2 acres to mow. The 54 inch version will mow up to 3.5 acres on one charge. Combine this mower with a brushless string trimmer, leaf blower, hedge trimmer, chain saw, and snowblower and many of us will be able to throw away our gas can and not worry about fuel problems again. Just so you know Ariens is part of Ariens Co. which includes Ariens and Gravely brands here in the U.S. Ariens focuses on snowblowers, power brushes, and residential zero-turn mowers. Gravely focuses on commercial zero-turns, commercial walk-behinds, and other landscaping equipment like the Pro-QXT two-wheeled tractor. Ariens sells through local dealers, Lowes, and a few other retailers. Over the last three years, Ariens has completely redesigned the residential models. The new Ariens Edge is an excellent mower at a reasonable price. In fact, it is arguably the best economy zero-turn on the market this year. If you are looking at a Troy-Bilt, ZT1 Cub Cadet, Husqvarna or any of the entry-level residential mowers from the other brands also look at the EDGE. The IKON XD is one of the few mid-priced ZTRs that will mow higher grass well. If you have a lot of roadways and soil erosion waterways that you don’t mow every week the IKON XD is a great choice. If you are looking at a Hustler Raptor or Bad Boy MZ seriously look at the Ariens mowers before you buy. The Ariens Apex is a heavy-duty residential mower that’s big, beefy, and will last you years. If you are looking at a Hustler Fastrak or Bad Boy ZT Elite seriously look at the Ariens mowers before you buy. The Ariens Zenith is a commercial-grade ZTR that will handle the biggest properties and last you many years. One of the best features about Ariens is you can buy your mower from a retailer and ANY authorized Ariens dealer will handle the warranty repairs if needed. The residential models are consistently rated by the product review sites that actually test the mowers as the best cutting residential riding lawn mowers. The new Ultima mowers feature the well-respected Kohler, Kawasaki, and Cub Cadet engines. John Deere Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers

If you want the best cut possible in a mid-mount residential zero-turn the John Deere 300 series mowers are hard to beat! Yes, there are other mowers that have stronger, fabricated decks, are more comfortable, and have larger frames but there are very few that cut as well as these John Deere Zero-Turns. John Deere sells through local dealers, The The Home Depot, Lowes, and a few other retailers. The models sold at the big box stores are the same mowers you can buy at the dealers. In addition, the dealer has more models available.

One of the reasons John Deere decks cut better than all the rest is because they use a deep stamped deck. Because there are no sharp corners or edges inside the deck this style of deck gives superior airflow under the deck. That creates the best lift to cut your grass evenly and the best airflow discharge to get the grass out from under the deck. The Z345 and Z355 Accel Deep decks are built just as tough as competitors fabricated decks.
The 300 series is competitively priced with the other residential zero-turns. Yes, the least expensive model is a little more than the competitor’s model because most models include free White Glove professional setup and delivery. When the mower arrives at your home from The Home Depot or your local John Deere dealer it is ready to mow. No shredded belts because the teenager at the big box store did not assemble it correctly. Even the model you pick up at The Home Depot is John Deere Tech inspected, tested and supported. A John Deere authorized technician will perform a thorough 10 point pre-delivery inspection on all new John Deere zero-turn mowers before they are ready to take home.
The John Deere ZTrak series zero-turn riders operate very smoothly and have comfortable handles.

42-inch size is a good choice for up to 2 acres. 48 inch is good for 1-3 acres and will mow a rough lawn better than the 54-inch models. 54 is good for those of you who have a large lawn and want to get it cut as quickly as possible. Not Recommended: Z335E ZTrak Mower 20 hp (14.9 kW)* full-pressure engine 42-in. Accel Deep Deck at Lowes. All John Deere ZTRs come with armrests except this one. When driving a ZTR your arms are extended straight out in front of you. Armrests are important on a ZTR because it helps to keep your shoulders from getting sore. Trust me – spend the extra $100 on the Z335M and get the armrests – you’ll be glad you did!

Troy-Bilt Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers

The new Mustang Z series is based on the same basic design as the new Cub Cadet Ultima XT1 but it does use a different frame. It’s $200 less than the Cub Cadet which makes it a very good value. If you are looking for a good, economical zero-turn for your suburban lawn I highly recommend the Troy-Bilt. Troy-Bilt sells through local dealers, The Home Depot, Troy-Bilt.com, and a few other retailers. The most notable features that are different from Cub Cadet:

Troy-Bilt uses a 13 gauge stamped deck that cuts, baggs and mulches very well. Cub Cadet has both stamped and fabricated decks available.
Deck Lift – The Troy-Bilt uses a 7 position lever. The Cub Cadet has a 13 position dial with foot assist lift
Cutting Height – 1.25 to 3.75. The Cub Cadet will adjust from 1-4.5 inches
Frame – Both have the fully welded 2-inch square tube frame
Engine – Troy-Bilt uses the Troy-Bilt Branded engines. Cub Cadet uses the Kohler, Kawasaki, and Cub Cadet engines.
Lights – Troy-Bilt none. Cub Cadet has wide area LEDs
Warranty – Troy-Bilt 3 years. Cub Cadet 3 years.

Over the last 30 years, there have been at least one hundred companies who have tried to enter the zero-turn mower market. The few who have made it past the five-year mark are making a product that is unique – something that homeowners want but no one has thought of it before. Excel Industries is known for producing the first lever-steer hydraulically driven zero-turn mower. Since then they have built a wide range of mowers ranging from cheap residential zero-turn to dependable commercial zero-turns to high production mowers designed for airports. Today they have a full range of mowers including the cheapest zero-turn on the market (the Dash.) Depending on where you live the Hustler or Big Dog mowers are very popular. They make a full line of residential and commercial mowers. If a Hustler or Big Dog mower is on your shortlist feel free to ask and I’ll help you find the best one for you. Hustler makes four economy models in the Raptor line. A 36 inch, 42 inch, 52 inch, and a 52-inch special edition. As usual, I don’t recommend the 36 inch. Most people who buy these mowers like them. The majority of the complaints come from the initial assembly when Lowes was selling them. So, I suggest if you want a Hustler – buy it from a local dealer. The local dealers will assemble it out of the crate correctly and test everything to make sure it is ready to mow. This ZTR is designed for flat and gently sloping lawns. Hustler/BigDog sells through local dealers. Hustler Mowers BigDog Mowers. Hustler Dash: Some of you may want the cheapest ZTR on the market. Right now that is the Hustler Dash. Be Aware it uses a “tiny” 10.5 hp Briggs PowerMore engine and the smallest zero-turn transmissions available. (HydroGear ZT-1800) Yes, it will mow your 1/3 to 1/2 acre flat, smooth lawn but please don’t expect it to do ANYTHING else. BigDog: Big Dog is Excel’s dealer only brand and are basically the same mowers as the Hustler. They usually have an extra feature or two over the Hustler Models. Big Dog: 7 Year (4-7yrs. parts only) / 300 hours Hustler: 3-year / no hour limit limited warranty

Country Clipper Residential Zero-Turn Mowers

I’ve been a big fan of Country Clipper since the mid-’90s. Country Clipper makes a full range of residential models but I particularly like the XLT model. It is a premium, fully loaded series that provides commercial quality and unique features for residential needs. Country Clipper offers an optional front step and full-length grab bars so people with disabilities (and old people like myself) can get on and off the mower easier. CR states that Husqvarna is one of the more repair-prone brands but these models are too new to fall into that general category they put them in. In other words, if you buy one of the models listed below it will last just as long and any other economy zero-turn. Husqvarna sells through local dealers, Lowes, Tractor Supply Co., ACME Tool, and a few other retailers. What’s innovative about the ClearCut® deck? Bad Boy Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers

Bad Boy Magnum MZ

Bad Boy Mower is known for its almost fluorescent orange paint and their extravagant display booths at the trade shows. Tractor Supply Company carries a few models that fit into the economy category, the 42 and 54 inch Bad Boy Magnum MZ. Bad Boy sells through local dealers and Tractor Supply Co When the MZ Magnum residential zero-turn first came out there were more than a few customers who complained about the cut but this is not that mower. Bad Boy redesigned the MZ Magnum and it now has a new 7 gauge fabricated deck. One thing I find interesting is on the Bad Boy website they only suggest this for 1.5 acres a week. That’s only 45 minutes or so run time per week. I don’t get it. 2-year limited warranty The price is a little higher than most of the mowers in this class/size so I suggest also looking at the Ariens Ikon XD and Cub Cadet if you want a fabricated deck. Bradley Stand-On Mowers

Bradley is very unique. The company has been around for a long time and has some of the best commercial mowers on the market for the money. Their mowers are half the price of anyone else. How can they do that?

They are a small manufacturer located south of Chicago. They basically only build the mower when you order it and don’t keep a lot of mowers in inventory.
They use the very best commercial grade parts but don’t add any features you don’t need.
They only make stand-on and walk-behind mowers.
3-year residential warranty

The mowers are considered commercial grade but because they cost so much less than most other brands it is worth your time if you want a good stand-on mower instead of a sit-down model. Exmark Zero-Turn Riding Mowers

By 1995 when Exmark introduced the Lazer Z there were already quite a few zero-turn mowers on the market but the Lazer Z was the first mid-mount model widely accepted by the commercial mowing operators. It was compact yet tough and you could fit three of them in the same space on a trailer that one Toro Groundsmaster took up. Even today, twenty-five years later, the Lazer Z is still the mower most mid-mount ZTRs are trying to beat. ExMark does not have an economy residential model. The lowest price option is the ExMark Quest. These are dealer only models with fabricated decks. I personally own the 42-inch fabricated deck steering wheel model and it cuts and drives great! If you don’t have access to the Toro brand these are a good alternative. They are very similar to the Toro Titan and larger models. Check out the mowers here: Exmark Mowers

Scag Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers:

Scag is another brand that has been around for quite some time and the Turf Tiger has been one of the most popular mowers for commercial operators. Scag sells through local dealers. Check out the mowers here: Scag Mowers While I highly recommend their commercial line of the ZTRs I very seldom recommend the residential Liberty Z. It is a short mower with small front tires so it does very well for lawn with intricate landscaping but is not the best riding mower for rough lawns and lawns with soft soils.

Bob-Cat Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers:

Bob-Cat is another brand that has been around for a long time. Unless you have a local dealer though you’ve probably never heard of them. Originally owned by Schiller Grounds Care (they make the Mantis tiller) they are now owned by Bobcat (the company that makes the skid-steer loaders) BobCat sells through local dealers. Check out the mowers here: BobCat Mowers The CRZ residential model is a mid-level residential mower with heavy-duty transmissions. If you have a rough lawn, hills, and 2 or more acres it is a good choice. They have one of the longest warranties in the industry.

Altoz Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers:

Altoz is a relatively new manufacture but has the engineering experience to produce some of the highest quality residential mowers on the market. From Altoz: “Based in Greenbush, Minnesota, Altoz puts over 30 years of engineering and manufacturing expertise into all Altoz products. With over 240 dedicated employees, we’re proudly building the next generation of precision mowers, right here in the USA. Altoz zero-turn mowers are an evolution – a vision of what we believe mowers should be. Cutting-edge design that delivers premium performance with exceptional comfort, reliability and ease of use. Everything we do is a commitment to realizing that vision. To deliver an evolutionary mower, every component needs to perform flawlessly and exceed expectations. We won’t make just another run-of-the-mill mower. Nothing less than superior quality will do.” Altoz sells through local dealers. Check out the mowers here: Altoz Mowers At $5699 the Altoz XR is their cheapest residential mower and it has more features, stronger transmissions, and more options than most of the other brands. They ride great, cut great and I expect the mowers to last a very long time.

Spartan Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers:

Spartan is an interesting marketing application. Let’s take a conventional zero-turn and make it look beefy, manly and Transformer looking – let’s add features that no one else has like triple jointed armrests and a 2-inch receiver slot in the rear. The owner, Robert Foster, built twelve prototypes in his garage over the summer of 2015 and then kept them secret until the big L&G dealer show (GIE-EXPO) that October. He then sprung them on the world at two-thirds the price of the current market. Spartan sells through local dealers. Check out the mowers here: Spartan Mowers Spartan recently introduced the RZ series residential zero-turns. Starting around $4200 you can build one exactly the way you want it with over 35 different options. They are one of the few manufactures that use Tuff-Torq hydraulic drives instead of the HydroGear hydrostatic transmissions. The TZ-400 drives they are using have the same specs as the Hydro-Gear ZT 2800.

Swisher Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers:

Swisher is known for the original zero-turn mower – the Ride-King, in-ground tornado shelters, and their extensive line of pull-behind lawn and brush mowers. They’ve been also producing ZTR mowers for many years. The Response 2 is their latest mower introduced about 5 years ago. It’s a heavy-duty mower and has unique pistol grip steering levers. The problem for me is I’ve never seen one in person, test drove one, or found a YouTube review of one. Swisher sells online through many retailers and through local dealers.

Bush Hog Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers:

Bush Hog Zero-Turn Mowers have been around since the early 90’s and many of those first mowers are still mowing lawns today. Bush Hog has always been know for tough, dependable mowers and the ZTRs are no exception. All their mowers have 7ga or thicker decks. Dixie Chopper Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers:

Dixie Chopper is a legacy brand in the zero-turn mower market and they have always been know for their stainless steel mowers and the “world’s fastest ZTR.” Dixie Chopper was recently purchased by the Alamo Group. Alamo is one of the largest manufacturers of farm and industrial equipment and the mowers are already being made at Alamo’s Gibson City, Il plant. So, in addition to the existing Dixie Chopper dealers expect to see the mowers show up at just about every farm equipment and rural lifestyle dealership in the country soon. Mean Green Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers:

If you are ready to go all-electric and the other electric residential mowers are just too small check out the Nemesis. It’s the most state-of-the-art mower on the market today. Mean Green was recently purchased by D.R.Power/Generac The Nemesis is a powerful zero-turn that can handle up to 1.5 hours of mowing (about 3 acres) on its small LEM4880 Green Lithium Battery or up to 2.5 hours of mowing (about 5 acres) on its large LEM48140 Green Lithium Battery. This makes the Nemesis ideal for both residential and light commercial properties. With the available multiple battery sizes, the Nemesis can be adapted for whatever the job requires. The Green Lithium batteries will last up to 5 times longer than old-style lead-acid batteries, providing 1500-3000 mowing hours.

Wright Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers:

Wright is the original stand-on zero-turn mower company. They don’t make a residential mower at this time but I did want to call out the Wright Sport^® X Gen2. Wright sells through local dealers. Check out the mowers here: Wright Mowers If you have a large, intricate lawn with numerous landscaping features and also large wide-open areas to mow the Sport^® X Gen2 is worth looking at. It gives you the best features of a stand-on mower and the ability to sit down and ride for the larger parts of your lawn. If you are normally spending 5 manhours or more a week mowing and trimming this may be just the mower for you!

WorldLawn Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers:

WorldLawn sells through local dealers. Check out the mowers here: WorldLawn Mowers Do you remember Encore zero-turn mowers? A Chinese company purchased Encore a while back and renamed it WorldLawn. They have improved and expanded the line over the years. They continue to make the mowers in Beatrice, KS. Most of their dealers are located in major metropolitan areas and I highly suggest that you check out the dealer before you buy one. They do make one model that is interesting to me. If you have one or two large, flat lawns their sidewinder wing mower is a good way to double your mowing width without adding another operator

Craftsman Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers

The current Craftsman ZTRs are made by MTD for Stanley, Balck & Decker. MTD owns Troy-Bilt and Cub Cadet. The Craftsman ZTRs you see at Lowes and are similar to the Troy-Bilt ZTRs but not exactly the same. They are very different than the Cub Cadet mowers. Craftsman has changed. There are now two Craftsman brands. Craftsman at Sears is the brand you knew and loved in the past. Craftsman SBD is new and owned by Stanley Black & Decker. So – I’m going to spend more time here explaining what Craftsman is than talking about the actual zero-turn mowers. If you understand all the different “Craftsman’s” you will be better at deciding if a Craftsman ZTR is the best mower for you. Last year Stanley Black & Decker purchased the Craftsman name from Sears. As part of that sale, Sears is still able to sell Craftsman branded merchandise but the products will be different than the Craftsman products from Stanley Black & Decker. Let me explain how that affects Zero-Turn Mowers. Craftsman at Sears: Craftsman Branded Mowers sold on sears.com and Sears Stores are still the products you are familiar with. The zero-turn mowers have not changed for 2020 but most are not available at this time. They are warrantied and serviced through Sear Repair Services. All parts and all parts for the older Craftsmans are available through searspartsdirect.com. Sears Hometown Store, and Sears Outlet, This includes Craftsman Professional mowers. Currently, all Craftsman mowers at Sears are listed “out-of-stock” and it is unclear if or when they will be available. Craftsman SBD: The mowers from Craftsman SBD (Stanley Black & Decker) are new. Currently, these Craftsman branded mowers are sold at Lowes, Ace, Farm & Fleet, and Amazon. It appears Craftsman SBD also took ownership of the website craftsman.com. There you can find warranty information and where to get repairs for your ZTR. It appears parts and service will be done through their ServiceNet Website. Besides buying the Craftsman brand Stanley Black & Decker also purchased a stake in MTD last year. What that means for you is all of the mowers, lawn tractors and snow blowers that have the Craftsman SBD name will be made by MTD. The new Craftsman SBD is based on the same basic chassis as the new Cub Cadet Ultima XT1. It’s $100 less than the Cub Cadet but lacks many of the features that the Cub Cadet has. At this point in time, I suggest spending a little extra and buying the Cub Cadet. The most notable features that are different:

Deck Lift – The Craftsman SBD uses a 7 position lever. The Cub Cadet has a 13 position dial with foot assist lift
Cutting Height – Craftsman SBD 1.25 to 3.75. The Cub Cadet will adjust from 1-4.5 inches
Frame – Both have the fully welded frame but the Cub Cadet has additional frame members in the rear to protect the engine.
Engine – Craftsman SBD uses the Briggs & Stratton Platinum. Cub Cadet use the Kohler 7000 and Kawasaki engines. All are extended life full pressure engines. (Better for hills and longer life compared to the B&S Intek)
Lights – Craftsman SBD none. Cub Cadet has wide area LEDs
Warranty – Craftsman SBD 2 years through Stanley Black & Decker. Cub Cadet 3 years through MTD and their large Cub Cadet dealer network.

Ferris/Simplicity/Snapper/Briggs & Stratton Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers:

It appears Briggs & Stratton just put up the Ferris/Simplicity/Snapper lawn & garden division up for sale. This includes Ferris, Simplicity, and Snapper brand names. Check out the article here: Briggs & Stratton Announces Strategic Repositioning Plan Ferris/Simplicity/Snapper/Briggs & Stratton sells through local dealers. Simplicity and Snapper both sell a zero-turn with the EZT transmissions but as far as I know they are only available through your local Simplicity or Snapper dealer. CR does not rate the Simplicity but unfortunately, they consistently give its twin, the Snapper 360Z, the lowest rating for ZTRs. I have not used one enough to verify if I agree with their rating or not. The only complaint I have with the Simplicity Courier Zero Turn Mower is I wish they would have put a small tailgate on the integrated cargo bed. The “The exclusive Suspension Comfort System complete with front or front & rear suspension allows you to feel 25% less impact while operating, resulting in enhanced comfort versus a non-suspension zero turn mower” Suspends the entire mower – not just the operator. Because of that, you may experience an uneven cut on really rough lawns because the deck moves up and down with the rest of the mower. If you have a rough lawn please demo it on your lawn first before you buy – or just pass and buy the Toro MyRide!

Beast Residential Zero-Turn Riding Mowers:

Beast is sold online only through a few big box store retailers. For fear of a lawsuit, I am not going to give you my opinion of these Chinese made mowers.

To Finish up: My definition of a residential zero-turn. (ZTR)

A typical Residential ZTR has the economy ZT-2200 dual hydrostatic transmissions or the heavier duty ZT-2800 and costs between $2200 and $5000. These zero-turns are designed to replace your lawn tractor/riding mower and save you time when mowing. These mowers are great for flat and lawns with slopes up to 15 degrees. Most models have a hitch and will pull a small yard cart, sweeper or dethatcher. The residential zero-turns in the past used the same deck as a lawn tractor but most are now using deep dish and/or fabricated decks that last longer, cut better, and mow faster than your old tractor. These new decks and the better agility of a zero-turn will allow you to mow your lawn is much less time than with a lawn tractor. Retailers I Trust

Today, many of you want to purchase online and most residential zero-turn mowers are now available online. I’ll include buying links from businesses I trust wherever possible. If I missed a brand available for sale online that’s not listed please ask about it in the comments at the end of this article. Buying Online: Home Depot has quietly become the best place to buy zero-turn mowers online. Why? Because they carry the brands most people want and their pricing is competitive. They carry exactly the same items as dealers. In most areas of the country, they work closely with local dealers to get any warranty problems resolved quickly. Be very careful buying from other big-box retailers because they either send your mower off to some far away “repair center” where it can sit for months or they don’t have any agreements with local dealers for warranty work. If you chose to buy from a big-box store other than The Home Depot be sure you understand warranty repairs and how/where they are performed before you buy! Here are a few other online retailers I trust to take care of you when you buy a mower from them. I will include links to their sites as appropriate: Farm & Fleet, ACME Tools, Tractor Supply Co., and Northern Tool. You can also have a great experience if you buy from Amazon themselves and a few resellers on Amazon. (If you find a mower you want on Amazon from a reseller ask me in the comments at the end of this article about that seller) Other Review Websites: I’ve been doing this for almost fifteen years now. I keep up with the current products and I try to be as impartial as I can to help you find the best product for you. I trust Consumer Reports to give accurate information for a selection of residential mowers and their testing is very specific. What’s New For 2021 Toro Snow Blowers?

Toro has made significant changes across the entire product line over the last three years. These snowblowers are competitively priced, state-of-the-art machines that are built to last you many years. Best of all they have the most complete selection – from a 12-inch cordless power shovel to a 32-inch track drive beast that’s easy to drive. You will find a snowblower that’s right for you!

New Features:

Metal Extended Chutes: All Toro 2-stage snow blowers have a metal chute. The Power Max HD models have a double-jointed extended chute (except the 828) for an increased range. You asked for it – they listened!
Metal ACS: The Power Max HD models now have an all-metal ACS. The Anti-Clogging System regulates the snow intake to the impeller allowing the engine to maintain maximum speed for the best performance and throwing distance. The open auger design and all-metal auger housing were also improved. The housing was tipped back slightly so you can push into and clear drifts easier.
Redesigned Impeller: The combination of the new impeller, extended chute, and larger engines on the commercial HD models increases the throw distance up to 60 feet.

So – The snow is already falling in Wisconsin. Relax, grab some hot chocolate and let’s get started on the 2020 Toro Snow Blowers. You know how long-winded I can get.

1. TORO Cordless 60 MAX

The electric Power Shovel and Power Clear are part of the 60 Volt MAX battery line. This growing line of brushless tools includes a leaf blower, string trimmer, hedge trimmer, chain saw, 21-inch SmartStow mower, 22-inch Personal Pace Recycler mower, 21-inch COMMERCIAL mower, Power Shovel, and Power Clear snowblower. 60 V MAX Power Shovel

60 V MAX Single-Stage Power Clear

The Toro 60V MAX snowthrower is the same size as the gas-powered 721 series. It’s 21 inches wide, will throw snow up to 40 feet, and has a 12-inch intake – it’s just battery-powered. I’ve used all the popular cordless electric snowthrowers and I like this one the best. It throws snow well, cleans down to the pavement well, it’s fast and lightweight. It’s extremely simple to operate. A power switch, high/low impeller speed switch, and a safety bail. The chute control is easy to reach and easy to turn. The steel auger is more durable and throws snow better than the other brands’ plastic front auger. This metal auger spins faster so it throws snow farther and chews through tough snow easier.

It has plenty of power to clear heavy/wet snow and will clear 6 inches of snow as fast as you can walk. The quick charger charges the battery quickly – but not too fast as to reduce the life of the battery. It only needs one battery to operate.
This snowthrower is very portable. Pull the battery and the thrower only weighs 40 lbs. Fold the all-steel handle over and it fits in your SUV. (I hate most of the other brands handles that slide or have plastic levers to break. This handle is strong and just works)
NOTE: The auger on this snowthrower (and most other brands of cordless) does not touch the ground. The scraper does the cleaning down to the pavement. The scraper is a consumable piece and it’s cheap and easy to replace when you wear it out.
It only uses one battery at a time. Other popular brands require two batteries to operate at the max level.

Personally, I purchased the model 39901 with the 7.5 AH battery. I also bought the 21-inch mower with a 7.5 and the trimmer with the 2.5AH. I purchased the blower bare tool. I now have plenty of batteries to work all day long clearing snow, mowing the lawn, trimming, and blowing leaves.

Toro just did what no other electric snowblower manufacturer could. The took their best all-metal 24 and 26 inch snowblowers and replaced the gas engine with electric! Introducing the 60 Volt MAX 2-stage Power Max!

Toro has two new snowblowers for this year. 24″ 2-stage 60 volt MAX Electric Battery 2-stage snowblower.

2. TORO Single-Stage Power Clear

I first started using the Toro single-stage snow throwers in the early ’90s and I have always liked how well they throw snow, how well they clear right down to the pavement, and how much abuse they will take. In the late 90’s I had one in the back of every snow plow truck and could count on them working when needed.

The Toro Power Clear 721 RC is still the snow thrower of choice for thousands of snow removal companies.

Toro Power Clear single-stage snow throwers have a 12-inch tall intake and will handle all types of snow well. Most other brands don’t like the end of the driveway snow pile but the Toro Power Clear handles it better than most. All of the Toro’s gas single-stage snowthrowers are auger propelled. That means the front rubber paddle touches the ground and will pull you forward reasonably well. The pivoting, easily replaceable scraper bar glides over cracks in your driveway and clears all the snow off your driveway. If the snow has been driven on just lift the handle a little and the rubber auger clears right down to the pavement.

Since the auger touches the ground single-stage snow throwers will pick up gravel, turf, and frozen dog “treats” and throw it through your glass window so don’t try to use it on unpaved areas.

Power Clear® 518

The Power Clear® 518 ZR (38472) and 518 ZE (38473) is a tiny little 18-inch gas-powered snow thrower. It won’t throw snow very far but it’s great for a raised deck, porch or to throw in the car trunk to go do Grandma’s sidewalks. It has a 99 cc, 4-cycle gas engine (no gas/oil mix) and only weighs 54 lbs. The 518 ZE does have an electric start!

3. TORO Single-Stage SnowMaster

The Toro SnowMaster is the first snow thrower I grab when I want to clear 2-8 inches of snow off my cement driveway. It will throw the snow as fast as I can walk and with its floating compression scraper clears down to the pavement without getting stuck on the cement edges sticking up. It also throws normal snow all the way across my 2 car driveway and off into the lawn. It clears the end of driveway snow easily if I get at it right away. It also works well on my brick patio out back. It’s as simple and easy to use a Toro Personal Pace lawn mower in these conditions.

The Toro SnowMaster has changed the topic of “What makes a good snow blower?” forever but I have developed a love/hate relationship with it. Yes, most of the time it is 20-50% faster than a typical 24-26 inch 2-stage snowblower and it’s is so easy to use, but it has a few limitations that keep it from being my number one pick on The Twenty Best Snow Blowers – September 2018 list.

It has three “features” that keep it from being the perfect snow thrower for most people.

Lightweight: I recommend it a lot to people in the Midwest and other areas that typically get good snow but I don’t recommend it in places like Long Island where you get a lot of heavy, wet snowfalls. Why? The Toro SnowMaster is different than a typical single-stage. Instead of using the auger to pull itself through the snow the SnowMaster has a Personal Pace drive with automatic steering. This makes it very fast and easy to use but when the snow gets packed down, is heavy or wet the snowblower does not have enough weight to push itself through more than 10 inches of snow. The Toro SnowMaster weighs about 120 lbs. A typical 24 inch 2-stage weighs about 200 bs. For example, overnight last winter I received 12 inches of heavy, “let’s make a snowman” snow and after one pass up and down my drive, I put the SnowMaster away and grabbed a 2-stage. The SnowMaster threw the snow well enough but didn’t have the weight to push itself through the snow. I also had the same issue a few times cleaning the end of driveway snow. If this was the only snow thrower I owned I’d learn to deal with it – only take a half pass – don’t get in a hurry, etc.

Free Wheel: This snowthrower has automatic steering so it’s very easy to maneuver but, the transmission does not hold it in place when going downhill. If you have a steep drive it will coast/freewheel down the hill. Yes, you can hold the metal bar under the Personal Pace – but that’s just awkward and a pain for smaller people.

Two-Stage Technology: Toro calls this “Two-Stage Technology.” Actually, this is a single-stage snow blower but the front auger is built differently than Toro’s Power Clear machines. The outer edges of the auger are metal. They chew up the snow and move it to the center section. The center section grabs the snow and throws it out of the machine. It’s also completely open in front so it will take on an 18-inch drift and does not plug up clearing really wet snow like some 2-stage machines will. It even handles slush OK. But, it does not have a second stage impeller that throws the snow long distances.

It is meant to be used on hard surfaces ONLY! The skid shoes are not adjustable so you can’t raise up the scraper bar to clear gravel or turf areas.

So, in summary. Even though this is one of my top choices this snow thrower is for a very specific buyer. Is it for you? It’s for you if you mainly get “normal” snow. It is for you if you get a lot more 2-6 inchers than 12+ wet snowfalls. Because it’s lightweight, you’ll want you to get right out and clean your driveway after a heavy snowfall. If you only need to clear a short path on the grass to the shed or over to the mailbox it will work OK but it’s not meant to go “off-road.” It throws snow as well as most $700-$999 2-stage machines and you can typically get done much faster. It has extremely simple controls. But, it may not be the best for you because it’s so lightweight and it will run out of traction trying to clear 10 inches or more of heavy/wet end of driveway snow.

4. TORO 2-Stage Power Max

Capacity-wise the Toro Power Max 2-stage snow blowers are a good choice for most of you reading this. They will handle normal yearly average snowfalls up to 60 inches well. The snow blowers are built very well and will last you a long time. They feature a one-piece frame/auger assembly so they are stronger than the competitors and won’t twist or get out of adjustment over the years. These snow blowers have larger engines and the patented Toro Anti-Clogging System (ACS) so they handle heavy, wet snow better than any other competitor’s 24-26 inch snowblower with the 12-inch impeller.

24″ (61 cm) Power Max® 824 OE 252cc Two-Stage Electric Start Gas Snow Blower (37798)MSRP: $999.00 USD. I’ve had hundreds of readers comment how small the tires were on the older Toro Power Max snowblowers so I’m very happy that Toro finally has decided to use larger wheels. The 15X5 inch tires combined with a larger 252 cc engine gives it an edge over most of the 24-inch snow blowers. The larger wheels and engine will handle wet, heavy snow very well. The Power Max 824 OE does not have power/auto-steering. The new metal chute is one feature you asked for and Toro listened.

Recommended: NEW! 26″ (66 cm) Power Max 826 OHAE 252cc Two-Stage Electric Start Gas Snow Blower (37802)MSRP: $1,199.00 USD. Personally, I like the Power Max® 826 OXE (37799) a lot. The new larger tires will help it with traction clearing the end-of-driveway snow plow pile and the redesigned Quick Stick Chute control is the easiest to use – period. It has automatic power steering with no triggers to mess with so it’s very easy to use for anyone. It really does turn as easily as a shopping cart. It has plenty of capacity and throwing distance for areas that get up to 60 inches of snow a year. The new metal high arc chute and heated handgrips are features you asked for and Toro listened.

26″ (66 cm) Power Max® 826 OAE 252cc Two-Stage Electric Start Gas Snow Blower (37799)MSRP: $1,099.00 USD. This model may still be available at select dealers and retailers. This model is exactly like the 826 above except it does not have the heated handgrips.

5. TORO 2-Stage Power Max HD

I like the Toro Power Max HD snowblowers a lot. They are premium snow blowers and have long been known as some of the best snow blowers in the industry. They are among the most dependable snow blowers made. The Toro Power Max HD snow blowers will handle all types of snow.

The Toro Power Max HD snow blowers are heavy-duty machines. These snow blowers look big but are actually very easy to use. They are balanced very well and have excellent traction in all conditions. I have no problems recommending them to any person who can walk behind a snowblower and use both hands.

They are very comparable to the Ariens Deluxe and Platinum Series and will easily outperform the more expensive Honda 2-stage snow blowers. I’ve been using the 928 OAE for a while now and it’s one of my favorite snow blowers. Consumer Reports agrees and currently gives the Power Max HD 928 OAE it’s highest rating. Toro has made a few significant changes recently to make a great snowblower even better.

New Metal ACS: The Power Max HD models now have an all-metal ACS. The Anti-Clogging System regulates the snow intake to the impeller allowing the engine to maintain maximum speed for the best performance and throwing distance. The all-metal auger housing was also improved and was tipped back slightly so you can push into deep snow and clear drifts easier.
New Top Load Gearbox: The new gearbox on the Power Max HD models does not have a vertical seam so it will not leak. High-impact, grade 5 steel shear bolts prevent damage to the gearcase. (Grade 5 is so strong you may never have to replace one)

Why Toro Power Max HD?

These snow blowers do not need high horsepower engines to do the work. The design of the Anti-Clog System inside the auger housing allows the impeller to off-load snow if there is too much. That gives the snowblower a consistent output without requiring an excessively large engine. Because of that, they have more capacity than snow blowers from other brands that use closed flight augers. These snow blowers are very fuel-efficient.
Like the other good heavy-duty snow blowers on the market, the Power Max HD series use a 14-inch impeller and 14-inch auger to give it more capacity and throwing distance than the compact residential grade snow blowers. They use a unique cupped impeller paddle that really throws the snow a long way – if you want it to.
The Anti-Clog System does not plug. It handles all types of snow including heavy, wet slushy snow well.
The Toro Power Max HD will throw more snow just as far as the Honda HSS928AW/HSS928AWD and costs almost $1000 less.
The Toro Power Max HD 828, 928 OAE, and 1030 OHAE have Triggerless Steering and steers/zero-turns as easily as a shopping cart. The rest of the Power Max HD snowblowers all use a trigger-style power steering system. The trigger steer goes in a straight line until you pull one of the handle mounted triggers to turn. You can pull both triggers to release both wheels at the same time to zero-turn.

Reading Toro Snow Blower Reviews:

1. When you read snow blower reviews you are going to find reviews that state “the engine would not start,” “the engine won’t stay running.” and “the engine runs rough.” You will find these reviews for all brands and sizes of snow blowers. 98% of the time engine problems with Toro snow blowers are either fuel or operator related. Toro Premium snow engines run/operate differently than your lawn mower engine and because of that, I suggest educating yourself on how to store fuel, how to keep your fuel clean, and how/why your snow blower engine runs the way it does. 2. By the way: The Toro snow blowers sold at a dealer are the exact same snowblower as sold at the retail stores like The Home Depot and ACME Tools.
3. Aggregate reviews. Many websites scour the web for reviews and then post them on their website. In other cases, one disgruntled owner will write the same or similar review in as many places as they can. So what you end up with is many reviews about one specific issue from only one person. I see this quite a bit on The Home Depot and Toro sites. Just remember, for every bad review there are thousands of Toro snow blowers sold and doing well. Please read the date the review was written and the wording to determine if there is an actual problem. If there ever is a recurring problem Toro identifies it and makes the changes so it gets fixed. In other words, negative reviews more than two years old are not worth your time to read.
4. I want to caution you about one type of review website in particular. There are dozens if not hundreds of sites that are only interested in making money through Amazon. If you read an article or watch on YouTube about a “Top 10” review or a “2018 Best” review and the ONLY place they send you is Amazon assume they did no research and are only trying to get you to buy something on Amazon through their affiliate link. Don’t get me wrong, Amazon is actually a great place to buy certain snow blowers but don’t believe the sites that only send you to Amazon.

I would like you to find the best snow blower for you but there are over 400 available so it’s an almost impossible task for you to find the right one. So let me help.

By the way – a quality $500 two-stage snow blower no longer exists. The base regular price is now $699.

I normally spend most of July and August talking to the different snow blower manufactures about the new models they have coming for the fall. Usually, in September the manufacturers are shipping the new models to the dealers and I spend the time I need to inspect the new models as local dealers put them out on the sales floor. Sometimes that also involves traveling to the manufactures assembly plants or corporate offices to look at, demo, and talk to the snow product managers. In October, I travel to the GIE-EXPO in Louisville, KY. GIE-EXPO is the largest lawn and garden equipment dealer show. There I get a chance to demo machines plus talk to the engineers and company management about all the features, fixes and new rumors. In addition, I keep 12-15 of the current snow blowers at my home for testing and answering your questions. I use these snow blowers when it snows and post videos using them on YouTube.

I also spend a lot of time reading reviews from owners, reading and watching video YouTube reviews from owners and of course keeping up with Consumer Reports latest test and reviews. Over the last ten years, I’ve become pretty good at sorting out honest reviews from the otherwise biased, paid, only here to make money, and only here to complain ones.

Cub Cadet 2X 2-Stage Snow Blowers

Cub Cadet has two types of 2-stage snow blowers. The “regular” HP models and a heavy-duty MAX series. The regular models are what you are used to. Good dependable snow blowers that work well for most of us. I highly recommend these if you live within one hundred miles of Interstate 80 here in the U.S. From North Platte, Nebraska to DesMoines, Chicago, Toledo, Detroit, Pittsburg, and New York City.

If you live north of I-80 or you get a lot of heavy, wet snow look at the heavy-duty MAX models with the larger 14-inch auger/impeller.

The heavy-duty 2-stage series has more capacity, a larger 14-inch impeller, a larger 14-inch front auger, and a higher front intake.

Cub Snow Blower 2X TWO-STAGE SERIES

2X-24. 243cc Cub Cadet engine. 12-inch impeller, 12-inch auger, 21-inch intake height. This 2-stage snow blower with power steering is one of the best values on the market. It is one of the most popular 24-inch snow blowers. It’s a great price at $899. The basic snowblower has been around for a long time and it’s always my first choice for people who average up to 60 inches a year with a 2 car 60-foot driveway and want an easy-to-use snowblower. This year it has been upgraded with a new dash, LED lights, chute, larger engine, and deflector controls. It works well for gravel, hard surfaces, and turf. It’s balanced well and the handlebars are lower than most other snow blowers so it works very well for shorter people. In fact, if you are under 6 feet tall, can walk and use both hands – you can use this machine. It comes with long-wearing poly skid shoes that won’t scratch your delicate pavers or leave brown rust stains on your concrete. It has all the features of the more expensive machines except hand warmers but they can be installed by your local Cub Cadet dealer.

Yes, it retails for a little more than many of the other 24-inch snow blowers but this is a solid well-built snowblower and will last you a long time.

(This 2-stage snowblower has one of the lowest handlebar heights in the industry. If you are 5’1″ to 5’9″ or have a small frame it is very easy to use. If you are over 6 feet move up to the 2X 26 HP.)

Good For: If you are looking for a snowblower for your smaller single or two-car driveway. If you have pavement and gravel to clear a 2-stage like this one is the correct choice. If you need a snowblower to bust through good-sized snowplow drifts or you get drifting on your driveway. If you average 60 inches or less snow a year (Most of the Midwest) this is a great choice. It has power steering so anyone can use it, a strong 243 cc engine for plenty of power for most snows, great headlights, and easy-to-use chute controls.

If you have space restrictions and need a small snowblower to fit in the garage in front of your car or have small gates to go through this is the best choice for a 2-stage snowblower.

Not Good For: If you live on the east coast or near the Lake Tahoe area and you regularly get a lot of heavy, wet snow. If you average more than 60 inches of snow a year you will want a snowblower with a 14-inch impeller.

I really like the new chute controls and the dash with 2 headlights. One feature most people miss is it now has taller tires so it will have better traction and the handles will be just a little taller than the older models. Power steering, metal chute, long-lasting skid shoes make this a great snow blower for the price.

Good For: It is a great choice for people who average up to 60 inches a year and have about a 100-foot 2-car driveway. It’s a lightweight snowblower compared to most others on the market so it’s easy for almost everyone to use. If a 24 inch is too small and a 28 inch too for your storage area this 26 is a great choice. This snow blower has plenty of power for its size.

Not Good For: This snow blower handles most types of snow well, including the snow plow drift out at the end of your driveway and I highly recommend it for most areas of the U.S. But if you live in an area of the country that regularly gets heavy/wet snow – Boston for example – this snow blower is not a good choice. With the new metal chute is does not plug very easily but the front auger may get full of snow. (The front wants to ride up in the deep snow)

It’s competitively priced and has all the creature features you could want including power steering, hand warmers, LED lights, 16X5 tires, and easy to use chute and deflector controls. In my opinion, this is a great snow blower for 2-3 car driveways up to 150 feet long that get an average of 60-80 inches per year.

Good For: It is a great choice for people who average up to 60 inches a year and have about a 150-foot 2-3 car driveway. It’s a lightweight snowblower compared to most others on the market so it’s easy for almost everyone to use. The 28-inch width is very popular among all the brands because it can quickly clear a large area compared to the 24-inch machines. The 277 engine has plenty of power for that type of snow clearing.

Not Good For: This snow blower handles most snow well, including the snow plow drift out at the end of your driveway and I highly recommend it for most areas of the U.S. But if you live in an area of the country that regularly gets heavy/wet snow – Boston for example – this snow blower is not a good choice. 2X 30 HP. 357cc Cub Cadet engine. 12-inch impeller, 12-inch auger, 21-inch intake height. Cub Cadet has updated and brought back the 30 inch 2-stage model. New steel chute, twin LED headlights and an updated engine.

Good For: It is a great choice for people who average up to 60 inches a year and have longer driveways. The 357 engine has plenty of power for that type of snow clearing.

Not Good For: This snowblower only throws snow 20-35 feet so if you have a wide area to clear (like a parking lot) there are other snow blowers that will do a better job. In addition, this snow blower has a limited capacity to handle heavy/wet snow and heavy snowfalls. The 12-inch impeller and 12-inch closed flight auger severely limit the amount of snow this 30-inch machine can move through it at one time. Almost all of the other 30 inch snowblowers on the market today (including the Cub Cadet 2X 30″ MAX) use a larger 14-inch impeller and front auger which greatly increases the capacity and throwing distance. In heavy/wet snow the new metal chute does not plug very easily but the 6-flight closed front auger may get full of snow and pack into a solid cylinder. Finally, if you are trying to clear more than a 10-inch snowfall the front may want to ride up or it will push the snow like a snowplow. Spend the extra money and buy the 2X 30″ MAX.

(This 30-inch snow blower housing, impeller, auger, and the engine is also marketed as the Troy-Bilt Storm XP 30, Craftsman SB630, Remington 30, Columbia, MTD, and Yard-Man. These snow blowers are popular because of the price but they all have this same issue)

Cub Cadet Heavy-Duty 2-Stage Snow Blower

2X 30″ MAX Snow Blower 357cc Cub Cadet engine. 14-inch impeller, 14-inch auger, 23-inch intake height.

This is my favorite Cub Cadet snowblower. At $1499 it is one of the best bargains if you get lots of snow. It will handle any snow you get including heavy/wet snow. The taller 23-inch intake is great if you get drifts. This is a true heavy-duty snowblower. It features a heavy-duty front gearbox. Large 14-inch auger and impeller. The large tires give you plenty of traction and the Cool Blue skid shoes won’t mar your pavers and will last a lot longer than the other poly shoes. When using this machine the extra bracing on the handles gives this snow blower a solid feel.

(I’ve been using the similar Troy-Bilt Arctic Storm for over 5 years now and it has been a very dependable and capable snowblower. This Cub Cadet has the new LED “wrap-around” lighting so you can see really well at night. It also has an updated engine and the chute/deflector controls work very well.)

Good For: If you live anywhere in the U.S. that gets heavy/wet snow this snow blower is a great choice. The larger diameter impeller and front auger will chew through the heaviest snow and throw it a long way. The extra lighting will be a welcome addition if you have to clear your snow at night.

I highly recommend this if you live on the east coast and get the “Nor’easter” storms, or upstate New York that gets the lake effect snows. It’s also a good choice for Nothern Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Salt Lake City, and even Lake Tahoe with it’s “snowcrete.”

Not Good For: I really don’t have anything bad to say about this snow blower other than I wish they also made a 26-inch version. It will handle any snow from 1 inch to 24 inches, heavy snow, wet snow, and of course, light fluffy snow. Be aware you will need a 36-inch minimum door to get it into your shed.

Husqvarna ST327P 2-Stage Snow Blower In Action – Hands on Test.

I have a horrible problem. I actually have too many snow blowers to test this year. We just started getting decent snows to test them out and I haven’t been able to get caught up.

I know you don’t feel sorry for me.

That said, I purchased a Husqvarna ST327P myself and I’ve never had the chance to really make a decent video of the capabilities of this heavy duty hydrostatic snow blower. So when my neighbor Jason told me his 20 year old Cub Cadet was finally worn out I asked him if he would use this snow blower this year and make a few videos.

So, here is a chance to see the ST327P in action. Personally I like how smooth the hydrostatic drive is, how far it throws snow and that the engine never lugs down. The 291 cc LCT engine has plenty of power for the size.

2016 Troy-Bilt Storm 2860 with the new Airless Tires!

I am finally getting a few videos done and here is one on the new Troy-Bilt 2860 with the new airless tires. I actually posted it on YouTube 2 weeks ago but I forgot to write a post for it here on MovingSnow! Anyway,

I have not been discussing the basic snow blowers much for the last 2 years because there has not been any real change. Up to now they threw snow and most of the time got the job done. But this new snow blower changes the tempo and introduces some well-need features into the economy market.

This is the first real test of the new Troy-Bilt Storm 2860. This new snow blower replaces the old, tired 2820 economy models. It features the new airless tires, very simple long-lasting chute control, extended chute, hand warmers and no power steering. Of course it has electric start.

What I like:

This is a good economy snow thrower and I was pleasantly surprised the first time I took it for spin around the driveway. These new airless tires make it very easy to use. This snow blower turns easily, is balanced well and “feels” a lot lighter than it is. Yes, it has good traction on the cement, on gravel and on my neighbor’s lawn. I don’t need or even want power steering with these new tires.

LET ME BE THE FIRST TO SAY: I really want a tire like this on the next new riding mower I buy! They might have to add a center rib so you don’t slide down a side slope but this is the future of L&G tires!

Poly skid shoes are now standard on Troy-Bilt snow blowers. The skid shoes on this snow thrower are the longer, long wearing ones.
The hanging chute has a crank for the side-to-side and a lever for the deflector. The crank is quick and the gears will last. The crank stays in place and is easier to use for more people than the old 4-way chute control.
The engine has been updated so the controls are all in one place and easier to reach.
A new low-tone muffler is noticeably quieter than your old snow blower. This new “Noiseguard” system does not sacrifice power for quiet.
Heated Handgrips and they work well!

What I don’t like:

I really don’t have any negatives with this machine but it may not be the best choice for you.

I don’t like the fact that there will be a group of Internet trolls that will make you think twice about buying this snow blower for your average size suburban driveway. This Troy-Bilt snow blower is not a heavy-duty, high-capacity, blizzard crunching machine. But, it is a well designed, good snow blower for about 80% of the U.S. It will last years with a little maintenance. I have no problems suggesting it for Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Minneapolis, Long Island and New Jersey.

My neighbor has an 20-year-old Yard Machines with a 9 HP Tecumseh. I let him use this snow thrower the last time it snowed. He has a one car 200 foot long asphalt driveway and a 40 X 40 pad in front of the garage. He also clears a smaller gravel driveway and the plow pile around three mailboxes. He loved it and said this is exactly the snow blower he has been looking for.

Before you buy one:

Be aware this snow blower will do the job for you but it won’t do it as fast as your son’s $1800 Ariens Platinum SHO. It won’t throw as far as the $3000 Honda. But for the $899 price it’s a really good value machine. It will handle 4-6 inch snows quickly. When you have 10-12 inches you will have to slow down to 1st or 2nd gear. It will take on that 24 inch drift through the middle of your driveway and clear it.

If you have used a snow blower before you know that how far the machine throws the snow is very dependent on the type of snow. This Troy-Bilt 2860 snow blower is pretty average for that. In other words it throws normal snow well, heavy wet snow ok, really light snow not as far and slush barely at all. Like 95% of the snow blowers on the market, if you step into a pile of snow and it splashes – this machine is not going to throw that slop and will most likely plug. If the snow is that wet you can always use it as a plow to push the slush off to the side.

Be aware it turns easy enough but it does not have power steering. If you have a bad back or you are small you may want to spend a little more and buy a snow blower with power steering.

In Summary:

This is a nice size snow blower for most driveways that is surprisingly easy to use with the new airless tires.

I consider this an excellent basic snow blower for most areas of the country that get 40-70 inches of snow a year. It will work well on 2-18 inches of snow and one or two car driveways up to 150 feet long. It can easily be adjusted for cement, black top, gravel driveways. With the long wearing poly skid shoes you can also use it on your stained concrete or nice patio. You can even adjust it for clearing a section of the lawn for your dogs.

Yes, this is a good value, well designed American made snow blower that will last you years on your residential property.

IN FACT: There is no need to even consider a Chinese made snow blower anymore. (A few Chinese made snow blowers – Dirty Hand Tools, DEK, Powersmart, Worldlawn, AAVIX, Amico, and Powerland)

Troy-Bilt Vortex 2490 Snow Blower Review

I’ve been holding off reviewing the Troy-Bilt Vortex series snow blowers because I wanted to see if they have the same problems as the Cub Cadet 3X snow blowers. As you know my slogan here is “It’s not what I think is best. It’s what is best for you.” I feel that for at least 90% of you this is not the snow blower for you.

Let me state right up front – it’s not a bad snow blower – it’s just not the best choice for most of us.

[alert-note]Now, I don’t have one of these to test. I live in a weird area of the country where my closest Lowes/Troy-Bilt Dealer is over 100 miles away. I only have the videos that Troy-Bilt has published on YouTube and owner reviews. I am basing my opinion on that public information and my experience with high speed spinning metal augers.[/alert-note]

Vortex 2490 Snow Thrower

I know, Consumer Reports really likes this snow blower and the Cub Cadet 3X. I’m sure it blows damp sawdust really, really well. But sawdust is not snow. Snow is never consistent like sawdust. This snow blower has problems with any type of snow other than the heaviest, wettest snow. In other words – “Normal” snow is what this snow blower has problems with.

For all of the amazing work that CR does, they seem to confine all of their opinions of snow blowers to “test protocols.” So even though they consistently test every snow blower the same way, it appears they missed how the 3 stage is not the ideal snow blower in other conditions than their test. It will be interesting to see if they change their rating when they have to clean their parking lot with this snow blower.

Who the Vortex 2490 is for:

If you regularly get 8 inches or more of heavy, wet snow this may be the right snow blower for you. If you live in upstate New York. If you live in a “snow belt” like Cleveland, Buffalo or Hammond this may be a good choice.

Who the Vortex 2490 is not for:

If you usually get 2 to 6 inches of snow. If you live in most of the midwest and east coast where you get a lot of 4 to 8 inch snows and only get one or two really big snows I suggest that you stick with a two-stage machine. If you live in Chicago you’ll be happier with the Storm 2420

Why is this snow blower not for most of us? In my non-engineering mind there are four parts to this 3-stage system.

The impeller (fan) in the back. This 12 inch, 4-blade fan takes the snow the front augers push into it and throws the snow out of the chute. This part of the snow blower is no different than the 2 stage MTD snow blowers.
The augers on either side of the front gearbox. These auger flights are the same as a 2 stage and they are designed to chew up snow and push it towards the center of the machine.
The rear auger. Back, behind the gearbox is an auger flight that is shrouded on the top and is designed to pull the snow from the two outer augers and the front “Accelerator” into the impeller at high speed. Once snow gets to this auger it appears to pull it in quickly to the impeller.
The “Accelerator” (front auger) is supposed to chew up the snow and send it into the rear auger. It appears that this works well on wet, heavy snow but anytime you have 6 inches of snow or less it just splatters snow all over your freshly cleaned driveway. The problem appears to be two-fold. First, the auger is spinning too fast so it won’t “catch” small amounts of snow and pull it into the rear auger. 2nd this problem is aggravated because the auger is the not tapered. In other words that big spinning chunk of steel causes more snow to be thrown off to the sides by inertia than what it grabs and pulls into the rear auger.

Why MTD wants to charge so much for this snow blower is beyond my understanding. They changed the front gearbox and added a 4 blade impeller. Other than that there is no re-engineering. There is not enough “new” on this snow blower to warrant a $400 price increase over the two-stage snow blower.

Can the design be fixed? I’m all for new ideas. I know there is a better way to move snow than the way we’ve been doing it for the last 50 years. I also know there has been a dozen or more variations on the “3-stage” design and none of the designs have become common place. The specific piece that needs to be engineered on this unit is the front auger. It looks like MTD just took an auger flight from their 2-stage machines and stuck it on the front. I feel if they create an open flight auger or one that is tapered like the end of a screw this design would work very well.

Here is one design that uses a tapered front auger. This snow blower is used at airports and will blow snow at 25 mph!

I already bought it and now I’m stuck with it! What do I do!

There have been a few reviews where the new owner has gotten past the 30 day return policy for the retailer they bought it from and now they are stuck with their Vortex. I have a few suggestions to help you live with your machine.

Leaving a Pile of Snow: When you come up to the end of a run and then backing up all snow blowers leave a little snow. The Vortex appears to leave more snow than most but there is a way to minimize that pile. When you get to the end of that run stop the forward motion of the snow blower and let the auger/impeller run for few seconds. Let it run until snow stops coming out the discharge chute. I know this sounds like common sense to some, but many of you have never owned a Troy-Bilt Snow Blower before. As you get more experience you can also plan your snow clearing so that you don’t have to back away from a building or landscape feature as often.

It’s Throwing Snow All Over: When blowing certain types of snow, especially less than 6 inches of light fluffy snow the front “accelerator” tends to throw more snow out of the snow blower than it pulls in. But the snow blower is consistent – it always throws out the front to the right. So plan your clearing so that the unblown snow is always to the right. For my driveway I would start in the middle, blow that section (run) and then turn around to my left and make the next pass. I would always keep the fresh snow to my right.

You can also speed up. If you only have a few inches and the snow blower is just making a mess try moving faster. If you can handle it physically increase the forward speed one or two gears and see if that helps. The Vortex is advertised as a high capacity machine and you may not be loading it enough for it to blow snow well.

Plugging Up: Some new owners are stating the snow blower plugs up all the time. Every snow is different but as you get more experience with the snow blower you will be able to tell what to do. First, if it is plugging up try taking only 1/2 width of snow. If it is plugging up on the snow plow drift you may have to take only a 1/4 pass.

Breaking Shear Pins: You are going to break shear pins on the front “accelerator” if you hit stuff. Chunks of ice, frozen newspapers, pop cans, etc. But if it is breaking shear pins for no apparent reason first try only taking 1/2 pass. If that reduces the breakage then your snow is just to hard. You will have to take only 1/4 or 1/2 pass until you get that snow cleared. If it is still breaking shear pins take it to your authorized dealer and see if there is something bent out of spec. There have been two reviews where the snow blower is breaking both the front and rear “accelerator” pins. This may something you hit and bent the whole shaft or it may be a factory defect. The servicing dealer will be able to tell the difference. ALWAYS USE ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT SHEAR PINS. NEVER USE BOLTS!

Ok, you get the point that this snow blower is advertised as a high capacity snow blower. It supposedly did such a great job of blowing saw dust for Consumer Reports that they gave it a best buy rating but I feel it is not the snow blower for most of us.

It’s Time To Think Differently About Engines

Before 2009 you just put up with whatever engine the manufactures installed. You replaced the electric starters regularly because the engines didn’t always start and replaced them when they blew up. There was some discussion about reliability but you pretty much put up with what engine your favorite brand installed. Reputation meant more than the facts.

But since then there has been a huge amount of discussion about snow blower engines. It all started when ethanol fuel was reformulated so that when left untreated would eat most of the plastic out of your carburetor. No one really discussed the real problem, the “elephant in the room,” – reliability.

Most of us don’t use a snow blower a lot. Here in the midwest we may have a long hard winter and our snow blower may get 30 hours of use. Other winters though it see’s very little use so most of the time the engine is long out of warranty before problems arise.

But that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve a reliable engine – an engine that will last the life of the snow blower.
